Burn the Floor is kicking off its 20th anniversary year at Arts Centre Melbourne’s State Theatre.
Burn the Floor began its life in the UK, as a way of taking competitive ballroom dancing to the theatrical stage. The show has enjoyed global success, although there’s a local connection – the director choreographers are Australians Peta Roby and Jason Gilkison. Roby and Gilkison were undefeated Australian Latin champions from 1981-1997, also taking out international titles in that time. More recently, Jason worked as a judge and choreographer on So You Think You Can Dance in both Australia and the United States. He was also the creative director for the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing in the UK and was nominated for a BAFTA Award for his work on the 2014 season.
Burn the Floor takes the century old “international style” of ballroom dancing and reinvents it for today’s audiences, breathing fresh life into the foxtrot, tango, rumba and jive.
Burn the Floor features 14 dancers who have spent their lives in the white-hot spotlight of competitive dance, as well as live singers and a band that re-imagines popular music from Santana to Led Zeppelin.
Burn the Floor plays Arts Centre Melbourne 6-15 January. For more info head to https://www.artscentremelbourne.com.au/
