Newcastle’s Catapult Dance will be welcoming Sydney-based choreographers Omer and Sharon Backley-Astrachan as artists in residence this November. The duo will be working on current pieces Tohu and Valley, both of which were presented at the 2016 Sydney Fringe Festival. The two works will be presented informally in Catapult's Studio space on Saturday 26 November at 7pm.
Tohu is a duet that takes place in a setting imagined and created by the artists. Tohu takes on various macro-processes that occur in the large universe and allows them to be transpired as abstract and metaphorical processes that take place in a re-imagined micro-universe.
Valley is a solo performed by dancer Allie Graham. Valley is a work of pure dance that captures the submergence of a young woman into the deep abstract and amorphous state of love and loneliness. Preview Valley here.
Whilst engaged in residencies at Catapult, visiting artists will also take company class with Catapult's U Turn Program Participants (adult dancers with a high level of formal training who are either preparing for tertiary dance education or returning to dance in a creative environment with opportunities to create original contemporary work with the possibility of live performance.)
