ADT savage

Daniel Riley, the new artistic director of Australian Dance Theatre, will take to the stage as a dancer and a choreographer in his first major creation for the company.

The work is called SAVAGE – t.h.e/v.i.o.l.e.n.c.e/o.f/f.o.r.g.e.t.t.i.n.g, and is described as "a confronting exploration of the notions of myth and identity, examines our fundamental belief systems, turning the spotlight on those who hold the power of storytelling and challenging us to question our blind obedience".

“I have a strong connection to the themes of SAVAGE," Riley explains, "and I really feel the need to be in it, to dance beside and within the ensemble. It’s going to be a real challenge to juggle both choreographing and performing, to step outside the work, assess and jump back in as a performer. I still have things I want to do on stage and with the incredible support and encouragement of Associate Artistic Director, Sarah-Jayne Howard, I have the freedom to do it.”

Joining Riley and the ADT Company Artists will be nine dance students from the graduating year of the Bachelor of Creative Arts (Dance) Flinders University, Adelaide College of the Arts program.

SAVAGE will have its world premiere on 22 September at the Dunstan Playhouse, Adelaide, as part of a four night season before performances on Ngunnawal Country (Canberra) (29 and 30 September). Canberra holds significance for Riley as it is where he began his dance career more than 20 years ago after meeting ADT founding artistic director, Elizabeth Cameron Dalman OAM.
