After a rigorous nine-month international search, Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet (RWB) has named Christopher Stowell as its new Artistic Director. Stowell, a celebrated figure in the ballet world with decades of experience as a dancer, choreographer, and leader, will begin his tenure in June 2025.

Stowell’s connection to the RWB is a deeply personal one. “As a teenage ballet student in Seattle, I eagerly anticipated the RWB’s performances. Their vibrant artistry and rich repertoire left an indelible mark on me,” he shared. “Now, I am honoured to lead this Canadian gem into its next chapter.”

With roots embedded in ballet, Stowell is the son of legendary artistic directors Kent Stowell and Francia Russell. His career spans 16 years as a principal dancer with San Francisco Ballet and leadership roles including Artistic Director of Oregon Ballet Theatre and Associate Artistic Director of the National Ballet of Canada. Known for his commitment to artistic excellence and innovation, he has worked with some of the world’s most renowned choreographers and ballet institutions.

The RWB Board of Directors selected Stowell for his alignment with the company’s mission to enrich the human experience through dance and his shared values of inclusivity, creativity, and collaboration. Board Chair John Osler noted, “Stowell’s vision and leadership will help us build on the RWB’s 85-year legacy while setting the stage for an innovative future.”

Stowell will succeed André Lewis, who has helmed the RWB since 1996. Lewis expressed confidence in his successor, stating, “Christopher’s passion and deep respect for the RWB’s history make him the perfect choice to lead the company into a new era.”

As Artistic Director, Stowell will guide the company’s artistic vision while collaborating with Executive Director Elena Tupyseva and the RWB’s dedicated administrative and artistic teams. He aims to expand the RWB’s reach, tell new stories, and cultivate creativity within the company and its audiences.

Stowell is excited to immerse himself in Winnipeg’s vibrant cultural scene, embracing both the RWB’s rich history and its promising future, saying "I am so grateful to the Board of Directors and André for their steady stewardship of the longest continuously operating ballet company in North America and for putting their trust in me for its next chapter. I look forward to working with Elena, Tara Birtwhistle, and the entire RWB family as we work together to ensure a strong and vital future for this institution"
