Introducing Dance Australia's new editor
After 35 years as Editor of 'Dance Australia', Karen van Ulzen has decided to step down. Taking her place is Olivia Weeks, who we welcome to the post at the start of the new year.
“Stepping into the role of Editor for Dance Australia is both an honour and deeply personal. Growing up, this magazine was a constant in my life—I first discovered it as a child in my grandparents’ ballet shop in Newcastle, where my love for dance began. Surrounded by rising stars and mentored by great Australian teachers, my childhood was steeped in artistry and inspiration, with frequent trips to the ballet and theatre.
"Karen van Ulzen’s leadership over so many years has shaped how we celebrate and champion Australian dance. To follow in her footsteps is both humbling and exciting. I hope to honour her remarkable legacy while bringing my own passion and perspective to the magazine’s next chapter.
"Professionally, I’ve worked with multiple dance schools in NSW and spent six years at the Royal Academy of Dance. From examinations to my role as National Marketing Manager, I’ve had the privilege of working with countless teachers, examiners, studio owners, and dancers. These connections have given me unique insight into the heartbeat of Australian dance.
"As Editor, I’m excited to contribute to our ever-evolving dance landscape. My goal is to continue to champion the incredible talent Australia has to offer, celebrate the stories that make our industry so unique, and ensure Dance Australia remains a vital platform for our community in 2025 and beyond.”
