Following a hiatus of two years, the Dance Australia annual Critics' Survey is back, but in a different form. Because of the continuing restrictions of the pandemic, to both performances and attendances, this year's iteration is smaller than in the past. Critics were asked to nominate in just one category: their highlight of the year.

Below is the highlight of the year for Geraldine Higginson, Dance Australia's Sydney critic.

The Australian Ballet’s production of Kunstkamer.

I saw two performances of this in the Australian Ballet’s April/May season at the Sydney Opera House and can still remember aspects of it quite vividly. Kunstkamer is a fabulous work on a grand scale and it showcased a diverse range of dancers throughout the ranks – from familiar faces to relative newcomers. Thanks go to the Australian Ballet for bringing such an exciting international work to our shores following a period where many Australians had been feeling cut off from the rest of the world due to travel restrictions. Guest performances by Artistic Director David Hallberg were an additional highlight of this season of Kunstkamer.

This is a sneak preview. Other critics taking part in the survey were Lesley Graham, Alana Kildea, Denise Richardson, Olivia Stewart, Maggie Tonkin, Michelle Potter and Karen van Ulzen.
