Li Cunxin’s first season as Artistic Director of Queensland Ballet (QB) will see the company mount three major classical ballets. Ben Stevenson’s internationally-acclaimed Cinderella will get the ball rolling in April, followed by Giselle in June and The Nutcracker in December. Giselle is staged and produced by Ai_Gul Gaisina (after Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot), while the choreographer for Nutcracker will be announced early next year.

Alongside these classical works, QB will present “Elegance” in August, a program of four contemporary ballets. The program will include Ershter Vals, choreographed by Chinese-born dancer and choreographer Ma Cong; Three Preludes choreographed by Ben Stevenson; Verdi Variations choreographed by Greg Horsman; and a world première from Brisbane-based dancer and choreographer Gareth Belling, danced to the inspiring music of Vivaldi.

Queensland Ballet has a tradition of supporting independent and emerging choreographers.  2013 will see this support continue, with “Dance Dialogues”, two studio programs of short contemporary and classical works, in February and August.
