March Dance indie festival returns!
The annual contemporary dance festival, March Dance, is returning in 2021, from March 1 to 31.
Created to support independent artists in Sydney, the festival brings together a diverse range of independent dance practices in Sydney and opens them up to a wide audience. This year, 102 artists will engage in 95 events across 10 Sydney venues (31 performances, eight workshops and 20 residencies) incorporating everything from the development of new dance works to workshops to performances, on-line live-streamed events and screening by Dance Cinema. Much of the program will showcase work that was put on hold due to the pandemic.
Finding space to create work in the current circumstances is challenging, and organisers have been inventive in finding venues. Performances will take place at an interesting mix of locations, such as the Petersham Station tunnel and an abandoned garment factory in Summer Hill.
The event is an Independent Dance Alliance (IDA) project and a partnership between Critical Path, DirtyFeet and ReadyMade Works. IDA has joined forces with numerous companies and venues from across Sydney to celebrate independent dance culture in Sydney.
Four artists - Elle Evangelista, Emily Flannery, Holly Craig and Wendy Yu - have been selected to receive mini bursaries of $1,000 to support their three-day residences.
"The 2021 festival is proud to support the Sydney dance community which has been struggling due to COVID," festival manager Lauren Vassallo says.
