Netherlands Dance Theatre performed to a packed out State Theatre in Melbourne last week, for an all-too-brief season from July 13-17. Not only was it the first time the company had appeared in Australia in 14 years, it was also the first time it had performed here without its former director, the great choreographer Jiri Kylian.
The new director, Jim Vincent, presented a surprisingly sombre triple bill program, notable for its dark colours and introspective moods.
Kylian’s legacy was represented with a mere 12 minute solo – which seems pity given he is still a universally adored and revered figure in the world of dance.
