No Lights No Lycra
At Dance Australia we have always been advocates of dance as being just as good a form of exercise as sport.
In this sports loving nation, it is sometimes hard to get across the idea that dance is just as beneficial as running around a footy field. So we are right behind this fantastic initiative called No Lights No Lycra.
Started on a cold wintry Tuesday night in June 2009 in St Marks Church Hall in Fitzroy, Melbourne, by two dance students, Alice Glenn and Heidi Barrett, NLNL has become a worldwide event. The idea is that anyone can come into a space wearing anything they want and dance their heart out without being seen. The lighting is kept dim and participants can dance as freely as they do in their lounge rooms.
NLNL has now been embraced by a program called Girls Make Your Move which is aimed at girls between the ages of 13-19 years and backed by the Federal Government. The campaign is designed to inspire, energise and empower young women to be more active regardless of ethnicity, size or ability. Studies show that young women are twice as likely as boys to be inactive and that they experience more barriers preventing them from being as physically active, hence the campaign is targeting girls.
The events are free and are held all over the country. The next one is being held on May 22 – Adelaide, 8pm- 930pm followed by May 24 in Melbourne, 630pm- 8pm.
So go along, join in, and dance like no one is watching!
