For 58 years, the New Zealand School of Dance (NZSD) has been a beacon of dance excellence, nurturing world-class talent right in the heart of Aotearoa. This year, the school marked its anniversary with its inaugural NZSD Day, a celebration of its legacy and a call to action for its future.
Since its humble beginnings in 1967, evolving from the National School of Ballet to embrace contemporary dance in 1982, NZSD has grown from teaching ten students to nearly ninety, fostering a rich tapestry of dancers who have graced prestigious stages worldwide. Graduates have gone on to join renowned companies like the Royal New Zealand Ballet, Sydney Dance Company, and Akram Khan Company, showcasing the school’s profound impact on the global dance landscape.
This year’s NZSD Day aimed to raise $5,800 for a projector screen in the school’s new studios at Te Whaea: The National Centre for Dance and Drama. The new studios, a significant expansion since the move to Te Whaea in 1999, provide much-needed space for the school’s burgeoning student body. The projector screen will enhance students' ability to incorporate multimedia into their performances, fostering innovation and preparing them for professional careers.
The response was extremely positive, with their goal of $5,800 exceeded. The success of the fundraising effort underscores the strong community support that has been integral to NZSD’s growth. From its early days funded by the Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council to its current status as a leading dance academy in the Southern Hemisphere, the school has thrived on the dedication of its tutors, staff, and supporters.
Under the direction of Garry Trinder, who has led the school since 1998, NZSD continues to uphold its commitment to excellence. Trinder, with his extensive background in the Royal Ballet School, Rambert School, and other prestigious institutions, brings a wealth of experience and vision to the school. The school’s impressive faculty, combined with the guidance of the Board of Trustees and Professional Advisory Panel, ensures that students receive top-tier training in both classical ballet and contemporary dance. NZSD’s commitment to nurturing talent is evident in the success of its graduates, who continue to make significant contributions to the dance world.
As NZSD celebrates 58 years of excellence, it looks forward to the next chapter, driven by the passion of its students, the dedication of its staff, and the unwavering support of its community. With the new studios and enhanced facilities, the school is poised to continue its legacy of shaping the future of dance in Aotearoa and beyond.
