Did you know that the National Library of Australia (NLA) offers Creative Arts Fellowships?

One of the two fellowships is open to artists working in any medium other than writing – and this includes dance. The fellowship offers practising artists the opportunity to develop an artistic concept or work that is inspired or informed by the NLA’s collections.

The fellowship includes $10, 000 for travel, accommodation support and project expenses. Successful Fellows will undertake a four-week residency at the NLA in Canberra. During this time, they will have special and supported access to collections, and access to office facilities.

The 2019 Creative Arts Fellow was choreographer and dancer Joel Bray. His research of the primary and scholarly sources documenting traditional Aboriginal ceremonial practices in the South-East of Australia informed his dance theatre project Burbang. You can watch a video of Bray presenting his work and talking about Burbang below.

Applications for the 2021 NLA Creative Arts Fellowships close 5pm, Friday 10 July 2020. More information and details of how to apply are available at www.nla.gov.au/awards-and-grants/creative-arts-fellowship
