The Youth America Grand Prix is growing ever larger. The prestigious ballet competition held semi-finals in 13 locations around the world this year, with two in Australia (Sydney and Brisbane) over two weekends in August and September.
The semi-finals have the benefit of being not just qualifiers for the final. Over the two-day event participants took class with ballet luminaries such as Lisa Pavane (director of the Australian Ballet School) and the Royal Ballet's Cuban-Canadian sensation Cesare Corrales (watch him here.).
The event also offers a cornucopia of scholarships to some of the world's top schools. This year about 100 of the competitors were offered short term scholarships to such places as the ABT Studio Company (US), Alberta Ballet School (Canada), the Australian Ballet School, Balletschule Theater Basel (Switzerland), Canada's National Ballet School, Dutch National Ballet School, Elmhurst Ballet School (UK), English National Ballet School, International Summer School Italy, John Cranko School of Ballet (Germany), Nervi Festival (Italy), Royal Ballet School of Antwerp (Dresden); Oslo National Academy of the Arts (Norway); Palucca University of Dance (Dresden), the Princess Grace Academy (Monaco) and the San Francisco Ballet School in the US.
In addition, Dante Minassian (Redlands Ballet and Dance Academy, Sydney); Rett Davies (Perth Classical and Contemporary Coaching) and Hani Green (from the Prima Youth Classical Academy, Geebung, Qld) have each been offered a full year's scholarship to the Australian Ballet School and Lily Sophia Dashwood (from the Jane Moore Academy in Melbourne) received a full year's scholarship to the Royal Ballet School in England. Noah Cosgriff (Jane Moore Academy) and Ben Moss (Alegria Dance Studios, Sydney) have been offered a year's scholarship to the English National Ballet School
Twenty-eight of competitors were invited to appear in the YAGP finals, which will be held in Tampa, Florida, in the US, from April 3 to 9, 2023, with the traditional “Stars of Today Meet the Stars of Tomorrow” Gala on April 9.
