In response to the closure of its theatre because of the pandemic, the Hamburg Ballet in Germany has begun streaming a weekly series of free, high quality recordings of works by John Neumeier, giving Australians a rare opportunity to see ballets never performed in this country.

“The current Corona crisis is a historical turning-point. It is particularly severe for us as a ballet company, because our creative development is based on the daily, physical work in the Ballet Centre Hamburg. Presenting video streams of our high-qualityballet films, is also a means of creating hope and a feeling of anticipation of an end to the global crisis”, Neumeier says.

The series started at Easter with the Saint Matthew Passion, that was scheduled to be performed live at the Hamburg State Opera, on Holy Thursday April 9, 4.30 pm and Sat April 18, 4.30 pm (German time). The recording was made in 2005 and features John Neumeier in the leading role of Jesus for the last time.

Next come Lady of the Camellias (April 16), Death in Venice (April 23), Beethoven Project (April 30) and Illusions – like Swan Lake (May 7). Each of the videos will be available for 48 hours as a free Video on Demand service on the website of the Hamburg Ballet. Nine days later, each production will be online for another 48 hours.
