After Images: 60 Years of Australian Dance Theatre
"An afterimage is what we are left with when the performance is over,"- Arlene Croce
This is a sentiment that resonates deeply within "After Images: Sixty Years of Australian Dance Theatre," currently at the Adelaide Festival Centre Gallery, as part of the Adelaide Festival.
This exhibition commemorates the 60th anniversary of Australian Dance Theatre (ADT), offering a reflective exploration of the company's profound influence on Australian contemporary dance. Dr Maggie Tonkin, Dr Siobhan Murphy, Adrianne Semmens, and Helen Trepa, in collaboration with the Performing Arts Collection, have curated a journey through the works of ADT's six artistic directors: Elizabeth Cameron Dalman, Jonathan Taylor, Leigh Warren, Meryl Tankard, Garry Stewart, and Daniel Riley.
Addressing the ephemeral nature of dance, "After Images" examines how archival materials can contribute to the preservation and interpretation of significant choreographic works. The exhibition showcases a diverse range of media, including photographic records, previously unseen archival film footage, costumes, and other ephemera.
A central aspect of the exhibition is the process of archival research and its role in recovering and re-evaluating less frequently revived works. As co-curator Dr. Tonkin said, "This exhibition is the culmination of an enormous amount of work, delving into public archives and private collections, and uncovering some gems along the way."
The exhibition provides insight into the creative processes behind ADT's works, through rehearsal footage, interviews, and audio recordings of dancers sharing their experiences. This multifaceted approach offers a nuanced understanding of the company's historical trajectory.
"After Images" provides a valuable opportunity to contemplate the historical evolution of ADT and its impact on the wider context of Australian dance. The exhibition is open to the public until March 24th, 2025.
