Ausdance ACT is set to host the largest Australian Dance Week program nationally, with a diverse schedule of classes, workshops, and events taking place across the capital from April 28 to May 5, 2025. The week is dedicated to celebrating and promoting the breadth of dance in the ACT, encompassing both professional and community practices.
The 2025 program features a wide range of opportunities for the public to engage with dance, offering a "tasting plate" of styles and experiences suitable for all ages and skill levels. While the full calendar is extensive, several highlights demonstrate the scope of activities available.
Professional development is a key component, with offerings such as the Australian Dance Party Professional Class at QL2 Dance Studio on April 28, open to all ages and focusing on adaptable exercises and guided improvisation. A further Australian Dance Party Professional Class on May 5, led by Sara Black, is tailored for those with formal training, delving into advanced contemporary techniques. For a deeper dive into performance practice, Australian Dance Party Immerse Labs with Omer Backley-Astrachan on May 3 will explore attention, awareness, and the dynamic between following and individual expression.
Community engagement is also central to the week. A free ZEST: Dance for Wellbeing class will be held at the National Library of Australia on May 2, specifically designed to encourage movement and cognitive health for adults of all mobilities. Stepping slightly outside of traditional forms, the Menagerie of Misfits - Tease Taster on May 1 offers an 18+ burlesque workshop focused on empowerment and body confidence.
For those interested in the intersection of dance and film, a dedicated Dance Film Workshop for Schools with Taiwanese artist Peng Hsiao-yin of Dancecology is scheduled for May 5. This workshop provides students aged 12-18 and their teachers with the skills to create a self-portrait dance film.
The program also extends to exploring different dance forms, including a Contact Improvisation Event with Debora Di Centa at Mirramu Creative Arts Centre on May 4, welcoming participants of all levels (18+) to explore movement and connection.
Beyond the practical workshops and classes, Ausdance ACT will host its annual networking Morning Tea on April 30 at the Gorman Arts Centre. This event provides an opportunity for the dance community to connect and will feature a presentation by a representative from the ACT Public Advocate and Children and Young People Commissioner on the implementation of the ACT Child Safe Standards Scheme.
