Australia will host the 2016 Genée International Ballet Competition, with the finals to be held at the Sydney Opera House, 11 December. Semi-finals will be held at the Concourse in Chatswood, 7-9 December.

Applications are now open for the competition and will close 3 October. For information about how to apply go to www.rad.org.uk/achieve/the-genee/genee-2016/how-to-apply The Genée International Ballet Competition, named after RAD's first president Dame Adeline Genée DBE, is the Royal Academy of Dance’s (RAD) flagship annual event.

The Genee, as it is known, attracts RAD-trained dancers from around the globe and is one of the most prestigious ballet competitions in the world. Candidates work with renowned choreographers and teachers for five days before performing at the semi-finals, and then the final, where they compete for a range of medals.

The competition started in 1931and has taken place almost every year since. Past Genée medalists have gone on to work for some of the best ballet companies around the world including the Royal Ballet, Royal Ballet of Flanders, The Mariinsky Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, National Ballet of Canada, Birmingham Royal Ballet, Estonia National Ballet, Australian Ballet, English National Ballet, San Francisco Ballet and the Hong Kong Ballet
