Brisbane choreographer Lisa Wilson is fascinated with the metaphorical and symbolic associations humans have with water. It is a fascination she explores “in depth” in her next major work, to premiere in Brisbane.
Called simply Lake, the show is performed entirely on a stage that is literally flooded with water.
Lake delves into our fascination and fear with water, a medium that can be at turns breathtakingly beautiful and a force of indiscriminate destruction.
“I was captivated by the concept of water reflecting our human emotions and connections,” she says. “As Lake portrays, they can be serene and calm, or menacing, murky and isolating. I was also keen to explore the primal aspect of water and what lies beneath when we ‘break the surface tension’ of a relationship.” Wilson will perform in Lake alongside Timothy Ohl and Hsin-Ju Chui.
Wilson is a former dancer from Expressions Dance Company. Now an independent choreographer, her previous work was Elbow Room, in 2010. She is a recipient of the prestigious Hephzibah Tintner Choreographic Fellowship and worked with some of the country’s leading artistic companies including the Australian Ballet, Sydney Dance Company and Opera Australia.
Following the season of Lake, she will then perform her second premiere for the year - Desire, performed by members of Sydney Dance Company as part of the Spring Dance program’s Contemporary Women short work series at the Sydney Opera House on August 29.
'Lake' will be performed at the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts from July 11 to 14. See here.
