The 2011 West Australian Dance Awards were held on November 30, with many of the state’s most respected artists receiving well-earned recognition for their contribution to dance.

 The most prestigious award went to teacher Terri Charlesworth, OAM. She established her school, the Terri Charlesworth School of Ballet, in 1960 and is responsible for training many professional dancers.

 The award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Dancer went to Danielle Micich for Wish and the award for Most Outstanding Performance by a Male Dancer went to Daryl Brandwood for Helix. The director and choreographer of that solo show, Barry Moreland, received the award for Most Outstanding Choreography.

The annual awards, which are organised by Ausdance WA, were held at BamBOO, an outdoor amphitheatre and function space.

Outstanding Achievement in Design/Composition for Dance:
Ian Batt, Cris Broadhurst, Jon Buswell, Bruce McKinven (winner) for Helix.

Outstanding Achievement in Regional/Community Dance:
Annette Carmichael for her achievements in regional dance development and community dance practice in particular Future Landings and moveMENt, a men’s contemporary dance ensemble based in Denmark.

Outstanding Emerging Artist:
Russell Leonard for his performances in Pride and Shortcuts demonstrating his continuing development as a talented and compelling dance artist.

Outstanding Achievement in Teaching:
Jane Murray for her significant achievements as dance teacher at Perth College for the past decade.

Services to Dance:
Ashley de Prazer for his 25-year involvement in dance as a freelance photographer and videographer.
