Dancer, teacher and choreographer, this multi-faceted artist has been teaching classical ballet at The National Ballet School in St Kilda, Melbourne, for five years.

What drew you to teaching dance?

My passion for teaching comes from the joy of exploring possibilities with students and being part of their growth. I love guiding them to understand movements and discover their artistic voice.

Do you specialise in a particular age group?

I specialise in teaching full-time and adult students. This group allows for deeper exploration of artistry and technique. I love teaching students who are engaged and clear about their goals.

How do you balance the importance of technique with the importance of artistry in your students?

Technique and artistry are intertwined. I encourage students to master their technique while always infusing their unique stories and emotions into their movement.

What is the most rewarding part of teaching dance?

The most rewarding part is seeing students have that "click" moment when they grasp a movement or concept. Watching them grow as artists and individuals is incredibly fulfilling.

What is the best quality a teacher can bring to the classroom?

Trust is the cornerstone of effective teaching. By being present and fostering a space where students feel safe to ask questions, I help them develop as dancers.

What has changed since you were a student?

My experience as a ballet student in Japan was quite rigid. It helped build a strong foundation of technique and work ethic. However, today’s emphasis on open communication between teachers and students fosters beautiful artistic qualities.

What advice would you give your students if they decide on a teaching career?

Focus on building trust and being open to new ideas. Tailor your feedback to each student, as everyone learns differently, has a different body and facility.

If you had to choose one main line of advice to pass on to your pupils, what would it be?

Always stay true to your artistry—your unique voice is your greatest asset.
