Congratulations to Nick Power who was recently announced as one of ten recipients of Creative Australia’s 2024 Fellowships. Each worth $80,000, Creative Australia Fellowships support outstanding established artists and arts workers’ activity and professional development for up to two years.

Nick Power’s Dance Fellowship will support the creation of Australia’s first professional hip hop dance theatre company. Speaking about this opportunity, Nick said:

“I am absolutely thrilled and honoured to receive this fellowship from Creative Australia. Through the fellowship I will establish a hip hop dance theatre company called The Foundation.  This company will not only support my artistic work but also respond to the community of hip hop dance artists taking up contemporary choreographic practice.  Over the next 18 months I will forge forward with these plans, building something that is sustainable, strongly embedded within the Australian Street Dance Community and with links into the Asia Pacific.  Some of my initial ideas are to build a professional development program for hip hop dance artists, create a performance platform for experimental street dance work and build an Australian - Pacifika street dance project following on from a residency I'm doing with my show Deejay x Dancer in Vanuatu this year.

This opportunity will allow me to dream big - to exist with a larger vista, to plan and vision over years rather than project to project.  I am so excited to get started.  I would like to thank Creative Australia for this fantastic opportunity and Cristina de Mello, Kath Papas and Justine Shih Pearson for their help with the application.”

Executive Director Arts Investment Alice Nash said:

“These fellowships are an important investment in Australia’s creative talent, supporting outstanding artists to develop their practice and create new works that reflect a dynamic and contemporary Australia. We look forward to seeing the impact these Fellowships will have, for the artists themselves and for audiences and communities across Australia.”
