Stability and strategic vision are secured for The Australian Ballet's immediate future as David Hallberg's contract as Artistic Director is extended until 2030 and Claire Spencer AM is named Executive Director.

David Hallberg, who assumed the role of Artistic Director in 2021, will continue his vision for the company for another five years. His tenure has so far been marked by a blend of classical excellence and contemporary innovation, bringing both established masterpieces and new creations to Australian audiences.

"My time at The Australian Ballet has been incredibly rewarding, and I am honoured to lead the Company through to 2030," Hallberg stated. He emphasised his commitment to "bringing both classical and contemporary works to stages around the country," and "continuing to define what an arts organisation is in today’s time."

Hallberg's career is distinguished by his international experience, having been a Principal Dancer with American Ballet Theatre and the Bolshoi Ballet. His extensive background has allowed him to collaborate with renowned choreographers and bring a global perspective to The Australian Ballet.

Complementing Hallberg's artistic leadership, Claire Spencer AM will join the company as Executive Director on March 24, 2025. Spencer brings a wealth of experience from her roles at Arts Centre Melbourne, Sydney Opera House, and the Barbican Centre in London.

"It is a true privilege to be appointed Executive Director of The Australian Ballet," Spencer said. "The Company has been a significant presence in my life since the 1990s, and I have been consistently impressed by the Company's ambition, beauty, strength and determination." She added, “I look forward to working with David Hallberg, the talented artists, and the dedicated staff to build on the Company’s extraordinary legacy and uphold its exceptional standards of ballet for audiences across Australia and beyond."

Spencer's expertise in sustainable growth and financial management will be crucial as The Australian Ballet navigates a changing cultural landscape. Her appointment, following an extensive search, signifies the company's focus on strategic planning and long-term stability.

Dr Richard Dammery, Chair of The Australian Ballet, expressed his delight at both appointments. "David Hallberg has continued the Company’s long tradition of exceptional artistic leadership, and we are thrilled to secure David for another five years," he said. He also praised Claire Spencer AM's skills, experience and collaborative leadership, noting in particular her importance in planning "an ambitious and sustainable future."

The Board also acknowledged the contribution of Sally Underwood, who served as Interim Executive Director.

With Hallberg's artistic vision and Spencer's strategic expertise, The Australian Ballet is poised for continued success as a leading cultural institution both in Australia and on the world stage.
