Gary Lang's 'Other Side'
Following the success of its 2022 show Waŋa, NT Dance Company is about to tour a new creation that "navigates the limits of physical expression".
Called The Other Side of Me, the new work is a duet choreographed by Gary Lang, NT Dance Company's Artistic Director. It is a cross-cultural collaboration with Northumbria University in the UK and is billed as posing "questions about relationships between country of origin, identity, adoption, the criminal justice system and psychological health."
The Other Side of Me follows the true-life story of a young Aboriginal man, born in the 1960s in the Northern Territory, adopted by a white English family and raised in a remote hamlet in the United Kingdom. Drawing on a collection of personal letters and poems, it offers insights into the mind of a man struggling to re-evaluating his life in light of his and First Nations Australian origins on the other side of the world.
The tour begins at Margaret River in WA on April 27, then moves to the Heath Ledger Theatre in Perth from April 30 to May 2, then venues in Karratha, Carnarvon, Darwin and Alice Springs.
