While the tango is probably the number one known style of dance associated with Argentine cultural traditions, the all-male troupe, Malevo, is making its Australian debut with a show that offers a high-energy modern take on the Argentinian folk dance, Malambo. A distinctively percussive style of traditional dance, Malambo is customarily performed solo and barefoot by Gauchos (South American cowboys), handed down from older to younger men. This performance combines elements of flamenco and zapateados (stomping) in heeled boots with fast leg movements and quick cepillados (brushing/scrubbing).

Supported by four musicians who play live onstage, the cast of 13 dancers use pulsating drums and percussion including hand-held boleadoras (a tool made from leather and stone traditionally used for hunting) which they spin in feats of speed and co-ordination that have to be seen to be believed.

Malevo has shared the stage with popstar Ricky Martin and Cirque du Soleil. They reached the semi-final in Season 11 of America’s Got Talent and have performed all over the world. This non-stop 80-minute show is pure entertainment and a terrific showcase for Argentine dance. While the Sydney season has just finished, Melbourne audiences can catch Malevo at the Arts Centre Melbourne this week from January 23 – 28.
