Congratulations to Buddy Malbasias, Bonnie Curtis and Jessica Hewett.

With support from AUSTI. Dance & Physical Theatre and MerrigongX, Buddy, Bonnie and Jessica will soon embark on a 12-day supported residency, working wth AUSTI company dancers to develop and present a new work. Their experimental choreography will premiere at the 2023 uNCOILEd eXposed season.

Buddy Malbasias is a Brisbane-based artist passionate about choreography, performance, creative direction and waacking. He graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Dance) at QUT as the 2022 Creative Industries University Medallist and Dance Performance Scholarship Recipient.

Beginning his training within the hip-hop choreography space, he subsequently received a QUT Elite Performance and Visual Art Scholarship to study contemporary dance. Buddy’s practice centres on human nature and the self through immersive, innovative and thought-provoking interdisciplinary explorations. Buddy has worked with respected companies, such as Ars Electronica, Queensland Museum, QACI, APAC and JKU Linz.

Bonnie Curtis is the Artistic Director/Choreographer of Bonnie Curtis Projects. Her creations and collaborations have been featured at ImPulsTanz, MUMOK (AT), Girona Film Festival (ES), CineWomen (EU), NZ Fringe (NZ), DirtyFeet, Melbourne Fringe, March Dance, and The Flying Nun by Brand X (AU) among many others.

Bonnie was selected to join the ATLAS Choreographers Programme at ImPulsTanz – Vienna International Dance Festival, an accomplishment made possible by the support of Veolia Mulwaree Trust and Ian Potter Cultural Trust.

Bonnie is a rebel bun-head who discovered her love of dance theatre while living in Berlin. Her artistic discipline fuses technical elements of dance with creative and somatic practices.

Jessica Hewett joined Austinmer Dance Theatre in 2015, dancing with the company for six years. Over this time, she had the privilege of working with a variety of national and international choreographers including Maurice Causey, Iratxe Ansa and Cass Mortimer Eipper.

Jessica’s HSC composition was awarded “Most Innovative Choreography” at FORM Dance Projects Short Sharp Dance Choreographic competition.

In 2020, Jessica was selected by Lisa Maris McDonnell to be part of Illawarra Dance Portraits. In 2023, Jessica was Dance Director and Lead Choreographer for the short film “REGRETTABLY SO” produced by Diversity Entertainment.
