Waru – journey of the small turtle, Bangarra Dance Company’s first dedicated work for children, begins a national tour in September.

This delightful little production has many big names behind it. The creator is Stephen Page (erstwhile artistic director of Bangarra), together with Hunter Page-Lochard, a familiar face as an actor on TV and screen. Bangarra alumni performers Sani Townson and Elma Kris and designer Jacob Nash are also among the creators.

The story follows Migi the turtle as as she undertakes a journey of discovery and survival. A contemporary saltwater Lagaw Kazil (Island Children) story inspired by the totemic system of the green turtle, Waru  is an interactive and immersive introduction to Torres Strait Islander culture and dance for three- to seven-year-olds. It includes many original songs as well as dance.

The tour begins at Art Centre Melbourne on September 15 and then continues on through centres in Wyong, Sydney, Geelong, Goulburn, Shoalhaven, Cairns and Darwin. For full details go here.
