Ivan Gil-Ortega Named Seventh Artistic Director of Queensland Ballet

Queensland Ballet is embarking on a new chapter with the appointment of celebrated international ballet professional Ivan Gil-Ortega as its seventh Artistic Director. His arrival in February 2025 marks a significant moment for the company, as it transitions into a new era of artistic innovation and growth.

Gil-Ortega, a distinguished ballet figure with over 25 years in the industry, brings a wealth of experience as a principal dancer, assistant director, artistic consultant, and rehearsal director. Born in Spain and fluent in five languages, he has built a remarkable international career working with renowned ballet companies across Europe, Asia, and Australia.

A Vision for the Future

Queensland Ballet’s Board Chair, Brett Clark, is confident that the company is poised for stability and growth under Gil-Ortega’s leadership.

“We are thrilled to welcome Ivan to the Queensland Ballet family. Throughout the recruitment process, he articulated a clear vision focused on nurturing our dancers of today and tomorrow through the work of our Academy. He is brimming with ideas around developing home-grown talent in Australia, as well as expanding global collaborations,” said Clark.

Gil-Ortega’s prior engagements with Queensland Ballet make him a familiar figure to the company. He was an integral part of its acclaimed 2016 and 2023 productions of Strictly Gershwin, working closely with choreographer and director Derek Deane. This connection, alongside his extensive industry network, positions him well to build on Queensland Ballet’s legacy while steering it toward new creative frontiers.

A New Era for Queensland Ballet

Gil-Ortega’s appointment aligns with Queensland Ballet’s 65th anniversary celebrations and the company’s ongoing growth as a global dance institution. Minister for the Arts, John-Paul Langbroek, welcomed the appointment, highlighting its importance in Queensland’s cultural and artistic landscape.

“Queensland Ballet has a reputation for breathtaking productions and world-class talent. Ivan joins at a time of great momentum, and his vision will help position Queensland Ballet on an even larger international stage,” said Langbroek.

Executive Director Dilshani Weerasinghe highlighted the thorough selection process that led to Gil-Ortega’s appointment. “We leaned into our inner circles, considering those who have worked with us and understand our culture, business, and sustainability strategy. Ivan is already familiar with our team and has exciting ideas to strengthen our connections with audiences, donors, and corporate partners.”

As part of his transition into the role, Gil-Ortega will join a Queensland Ballet delegation in Switzerland for the Prix de Lausanne in February. This prestigious ballet competition will also see former Artistic Director Li Cunxin AO receive the Lifetime Achievement Award, honouring his exceptional contribution to dance. In addition, Cunxin has accepted Queensland Ballet’s invitation to serve as the inaugural Chair of the company’s Endowment Fund, ensuring its long-term sustainability and investment in the next generation of dancers.

Looking Ahead

Gil-Ortega’s vision for Queensland Ballet is rooted in artistic excellence, collaboration, and innovation. “I am committed to fostering a collaborative and inclusive atmosphere that honours the legacy of ballet while pushing creative boundaries,” he stated. “Queensland Ballet has always dared to dream big, and I am excited to bring my energy and passion to this inspiring company.”

Former Artistic Director Li Cunxin reflected on his tenure and the future of Queensland Ballet under Gil-Ortega’s leadership, underscoring the importance of continuity and support for the company’s future.

“As Artistic Director from 2013-2023, I had the privilege of being a part of QB’s journey, standing on the shoulders of the Artistic Directors before me. There can be no higher honour than ensuring that QB continues to thrive forever, beyond me and all of us. The only way to sustain a charitable, for-purpose organisation such as this one, is to build the strongest foundation of support possible: our Endowment. I look forward to sharing more news of our plans soon and am very excited to be working closely with Ivan, Dilshani and the QB team to truly make a difference,” said Li.

With a fully programmed 2025 season on the horizon, all eyes will be on Gil-Ortega as he takes the reins and guides Queensland Ballet into its next exciting chapter.
